The Typographic Quartet: A Card Game About Typefaces
Project duration: January 2003 – March 2004
MWIMMERDESIGN conceived and designed the card game “Das Typografische Quartett” for the Hermann Schmidt Mainz publishing house, which teaches about typefaces in a playful way.

Client and Project
Hermann Schmidt GmbH & Co. KG, based in Mainz, is a specialized publisher in the fields of design and typography.
MWIMMERDESIGN was tasked with conceptualizing and designing a typographic card game that conveys knowledge about type design and typography in an entertaining way.
Strategy
The solution was based on the familiar “Quartett” game, in which players compare and trade card values, adapted to the theme of typography.
Implementation
The result is a card game with 27 categories, each featuring four different fonts.
Features such as serifs, ascenders, and descenders, as well as typeface classification, are taught in a playful way, supplemented by additional – and sometimes humorous – comparison categories.
Result
Wimmer, Ehlers und Schmitz erhielten für das Kartenspiel eine Anerkennungsurkunde des rheinland-pfälzischen Wirtschaftsministers.
The following were delivered:
The complete card game “Das Typografische Quartett” (ISBN 978-3-87439-628-8), published in 2003 by Hermann Schmidt.

About the Typographic Quartet
Along the way, players learn how to use serifs, ascenders, and descenders with confidence, as well as everything about typeface classification and the number of styles in a font.
In addition, categories such as “Prolofactor,” “Dynamics,” and “Volume” add to the fun of the game.
