The First Logos: From Antiquity to the Middle Ages

Logos as Symbols of Manufacturers and Owners

The earliest known logos date back to antiquity, when symbols were used for communication. The ancient Egyptians used hieroglyphs to represent words and ideas. The Greeks and Romans also used symbols – such as their respective gods and goddesses – to convey their beliefs and values.

In the Middle Ages, logos evolved from symbols used to identify the manufacturer or owner of an item. Merchants in Europe used heraldic shields and coats of arms to identify their goods and services. These shields and coats of arms were decorated with symbols representing their social status or trade.

Starting in the 16th century, cattle were marked with brand marks (branding). These simple marks provided information about the animals’ owner.

Logos During the Industrial Revolution

Logos for Identification and Protection Against Imitators

The Industrial Revolution in the 19th century brought about significant changes in logo design. With the advancement of manufacturing processes and the rise of industrial production, so-called trademarks became commonplace.

These offered companies the opportunity to identify their products in order to distinguish themselves from their competitors and take action against counterfeits. This led to the development of more sophisticated logos that incorporated typography and graphic design.

One of the most iconic logos of that era is the Coca-Cola logo. The Coca-Cola logo was designed by Frank M. Robinson in 1886.

The flowing, curved shapes are influenced by Art Nouveau. For the lettering, he used the “Spencerian Script” font.

Today, it is one of the most recognizable logos in the world.

The Modern Era in the 20th Century

Logos as Part of Corporate Identity

The 20th century brought about a significant shift in logo design as companies recognized the importance of brand development and marketing.

In the postwar period, the growing middle class became an increasingly attractive consumer group. Mass media were used to disseminate advertising messages and, along with them, the respective logos (brands).

Logos have become an essential part of corporate identity and are now ubiquitous. Logo design has become increasingly sophisticated.

One of the most famous logos of the 20th century is the Nike Swoosh. The Nike logo was designed in 1971 by graphic designer Carolyn Davidson and has become synonymous with the brand’s commitment to athleticism and innovation.

Logos in the Digital 21st Century

Logos for Identification and as Conveyors of Emotion

In the digital age, logos have become even more important for companies, as they serve as the first point of contact for potential customers. A logo symbolizes the brand strategy.

A well-designed logo can help a brand stand out from the competition, establish an emotional connection with customers, increase perceived value, and build trust and credibility.

People use logos to associate themselves with a brand’s values by choosing products or services that align with their personal values and beliefs.

For example, someone who values sustainability and environmental friendliness will buy products from a brand that emphasizes these values in its branding and communications.

In addition, people use brands to signal their identity or affiliation with a particular group or community.

This is often seen in fashion, where people wear clothing with eye-catching logos to signal their affiliation with a particular brand or lifestyle.

To be commercially successful today, companies need a strong visual identity that works across different media and is easily recognizable.

Successful companies need a strong visual identity with high recognition value. A consistent corporate design forms the foundation for this.

Modern logos are simple, memorable, and versatile – ideal for websites, social media, and digital platforms. They are increasingly being used as animated logos.
